If you have a child of your own then the game can become almost unendurable, and yet it never feels manipulative. In gameplay terms it makes only a relatively small difference though, as you try to keep the more attention-deficient younglings distracted and in a positive frame of mind.īut unlike the adult civilians there’s little chance of quiet stoicism in the face of injury, and more likely endless crying and sobbing.

This War Of Mine was first released on PC in 2014, and the addition of children is the primary new feature in this console version. If left unchecked depression can quickly set in and that can in turn lead to suicide. This is the only game we can think of where remorse is used as a game mechanic, so even if you’re heartless enough not to feel bad about stealing someone else’s food the character in the game will hang their head in shame, drag their feet, and become ever more listless the more horrors they’re forced to perform. Although scavenging medicine and protecting yourself from skirmishers are also concerns your overriding priority is to find enough food that you and your fellow survivors don’t die of starvation. Your goal here is not to win a war but simply to survive one, which means basically one thing: food. You occasionally get to shoot or stab someone, but it’s always a panicked, messy affair that doesn’t offer any adrenaline rush in return. There’s no storming of beachheads or planting of explosives in This War Of Mine. Struggling with a lack of food, limited or no medical supplies and under the threat of constant danger from the world around, players will need to make life-or-death decisions just to make it through another day. But although This War Of Mine does put children in the line of fire, it’s a very different kind of warfare simulator… This War Of Mine: The Little Ones provides an experience of war not from an elite soldier´s point of view but from the perspective of a group of civilians that are trying to survive. Even Grand Theft Auto and the like know it’s not going do anyone any good to have YouTube filled with videos of kids being massacred. There’s a reason children are very rarely featured in action games. Gaming’s most realistic war sim comes to consoles, as you try to help adults and children survive the horrors of battle.

You play as an overseer of sorts and have to manage your team's survival from the elements, illness, starvation, on scavenging missions, and from bandits. Finally 11 bit studios has brought the DLC The Little Ones to the game to purchase.įor those who haven't played the game before, This War of Mine is a marvellous mix of hope, despair, betrayal, and determinations. As one of the most haunting and harrowing games out on the market, This War of Mine is a bitter-sweet experience that you sometimes hate to love.
